How it works
Check the product label and what your fish and plants can tolerate before you dose. Many plants are sensitive to anything above about 1 ppt.
1 ppt is 0.1%. Measure the salinity before you add salt, and again once it has mixed for 24 hours. The volume range assumes a meter that reads within ±0.05 ppt each time, and test strips may be too coarse for that.
Use plain sodium chloride with no additives, and never road de-icing salt. Dissolve it in pond water first and add it near the return flow. Spread a therapeutic dose over 24 to 48 hours, following the product instructions. Salt stays behind when water evaporates and only leaves when you change water.
Want the precise number?
Type your measurements in above for a quick estimate. For the real volume, trace your pond on a photo or satellite image and set its depths. PondTools measures the actual outline, so dosing, liner and pump sizes come out right.
